FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Hoolie

We haven’t actually been asked all that many questions yet so we’ve had a go at trying to determine what they might be…

  1. What is Hoolie?
Hoolie is an email newsletter creation and sending application.  It allows you to send beautiful personalized messages to your groups really easily and professionally (ever receive a message with all the recipients in the to field? that’s nasty and poor form).
  2. What platform does Hoolie work on?
Hoolie is a Mac application and works with OS/X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or higher (on 64bit, Intel Macs). Hoolie has been tested to date on Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion (Preview 1).
  3. Who makes Hoolie?
Hoolie is made by an Irish company called Infacta. Infacta have been making group email software since the 90′s for Windows – we’d like to think we’re kinda good at it.
  4. How much does Hoolie cost?
We’re introducing Hoolie for a one time fee of just $39.95 USD (€31.95 EUR). We feel this represents extraordinary value for money and we must re-iterate that this is an introductory offer only.
  5. Are there any other costs?
Not for Hoolie. You may have to pay ISP or Email service provider fees but there are no additional costs for using Hoolie.
  6. Where can I buy Hoolie?
At the moment Hoolie is only available to buy from the Mac App Store.
  7. Is there a trial version available?
Not at the moment. We haven’t figured out the best way to do this in conjunction with the App Store – yet. The last thing we want is people losing their work just because they’ve upgraded – that would kinda suck. If you purchase and you don’t like the app and we can’t help you then of course you are free to request a refund from Apple (see here for more info).
  8. What do I need to use Hoolie?
Hoolie uses your own internet connection (and SMTP Server), and your own address book. You are completely in-charge. Everything is hosted on your computer and completely private to you.
  9. What’s an SMTP server?
This is the server that delivers your email messages. Think of it as the post office. Your internet service provider typically supplies you with access to one of these. Just put the details into Hoolie and it will happily start sending your messages. If you are sending large volumes then it may be worth your while considering a specialist email delivery company like SMTP2Go or AuthSMTP. If you are sending only small amounts of email (less than 100 per day) then Gmail may suit. We’ve tested Hoolie with all of these services and it works perfectly with all of them.
  10. I use Windows/Linux – will Hoolie work on that?
Nope. Hoolie is a Mac only app. All hope is not lost though – our big sister, GroupMail, is the business when it comes to sending newsletters on Windows computers – check it out here.
  11. What version of OS/X does Hoolie work with?
Hoolie works with Snow Leopard (10.6.7+), Lion (10.7.3+) and it has been briefly tested on Mountain Lion (Preview 1).
  12. Is there an iOS version?
Not yet but we’re hoping to do something exciting in this space soon.
  13. Android?
Not yet and, to be honest it’s highly unlikely that we’ll build for Android (it’s too fragmented).
  14. Do I have to use the OS/X Address Book (Contacts on Mountain Lion) App to manage my groups?
Short answer? Yes. Long answer? If you want us to support other list or group types let us know. We’re considering some approaches to doing this at the moment. We chose the address book to begin with because it’s fairly robust and it uses iCloud etc to synchronize across any other machines you might have – that’s kinda nice built in functionality when you think about it.
  15. Where can  I get more templates?
Hoolie comes with some built in templates – and we plan to release updates to these every couple of weeks. Of course you can use your own quite easily – just have your template saved as a regular HTML file and open that in Hoolie from the file menu. Simples.
  16. How can I track the emails I send?
Using a service like GroupMetrics you can easily track what your recipients are doing with your email messages (like if they opened the message or clicked on any links in it). Please see this article for more information.
  17. If I purchase from the App Store can I get a refund?
To obtain a refund you need to contact Apple Customer Service – please click here for details on how to do that.
  18. I have more questions – or I need help!
If your questions haven’t been answered above, or if you need technical support or further help with Hoolie please don’t hesitate to contact us – seriously we’d love to hear from you!
